Why we teach Spanish

We believe learning a modern foreign language is a vital part of primary education. It helps children grow in confidence, raises their understanding of other cultures and deepens their curiosity about the world around them.

Every Key Stage 2 pupil learns Spanish. Our aim is for children to leave us able to communicate with growing confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing, and well prepared to continue their language learning at secondary school.

How we teach Spanish

Children in Years 3 to 6 have a weekly Spanish lesson. They acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary, language skills and grammar, organised around engaging topics and themes. Lessons are pitched to give every child the right level of challenge, so that knowledge and enthusiasm grow together.

From single words to extended Spanish

Units become more demanding each year, in vocabulary, grammar and the length of what children can understand and produce.

Earlier language is never left behind. In every unit, children:

• Recall
• Consolidate

What each year group learns

Each half-term has its own unit, so children cover six units a year and twenty-four across Key Stage 2.

What children achieve

Our units move from early language learning, through intermediate units, to more advanced ones. Children start by learning nouns and articles and forming short phrases. By Year 6, they read much longer texts and create their own personalised responses, drawing on a wide bank of vocabulary, grammar and structures. Teachers assess each unit against its "to know" statements, so we can check learning is secure before moving on.
