Spring Term 1
PSHE
Today explored the term “disability”. We looked at what we defined as a disability. The children were provided with a range of celebrity photos they were asked to sort the photos according to those with a disability and without. The children created two distinct groups. However, following discussions, the quickly realised that not all disabilities can be seen by looking at someone. They were told that all the people in the photos had some form of disability.
History
This week we have become archaeologists. We have unearthed some unique artefacts associated with tools from the Stone Age. We then used our prior knowledge to place these items on a Stone Age timeline.
Worksop Mosque
Year 3 visited our local Mosque this week. We went with a view to see what the mosque looks like externally and internally, looking at the different features. We were made to feel very welcome by the staff. Children learnt about the practices that happen in the mosque, the times they pray, how they prepare for prayer and how this is conducted. It was very informative and supported the children’s learning and understanding.
Creswell Crags
Today we had an amazing day at Creswell Crags in Derbyshire. Pupils thoroughly enjoyed the days events. We became archaeologists for part of the day, looking at previous discoveries made within the Crags, we explored “Robin Hoods Cave”, wearing our hard hats and taking torches so we could see the in the dark, gloomy cave. We had a go at hunting a bison using a spear before visiting the museum and looking at different types of rocks, classifying and organising them by texture and type.
The staff at Creswell were particularly impressed with our pupils in-depth knowledge and understanding of the Stone Age and the different types of rocks. Behaviour was impeccable too.
Perimeter
In Maths, we have moved on to perimeter. Children have a good understanding of what perimeter is and how to find and calculate it. We initially, struggled to use a ruler correctly, mixing up cm and mm. However, the children were resilient and persevered. We had a practical lesson simply measuring accurately, using the correct unit of measure and starting at 0. Huge progress and the degree of accuracy significantly improved.
Hot Seating
To ensure that we have a good understanding of a book characters characteristics, we hot seated a character “Om”, from our text; The Stone Age Boy. We asked Om a range of open and closed questions in order to have a secure understanding of what Om was like. The children prepared their questions in advance, using diamond ranking to ensure their most important questions were asked first. Child will go on to write a detailed character description of Om, utilising some of this information.
PSHE - Disabilities
This week can were given a bank of images of famous people. Children were asked at the start of the lesson to sort these, no given criteria; they were sorted in many different ways, gender, job role, any age etc. The children were then asked to sort these using the term “disability”. The class sorted these images by means of physical disability (The only disability you can see from an image). When we discussed that all the famous people, in actual fact, had a form of disability. We spoke about the varying forms of disabilities and how we should be “accepting” and “tolerant”.
Science- Properties of Rocks
In science, this week, we have explored the properties of different types of rock. We have looked at how soft or hard they are, if they are permeable or impermeable and the textures of each. From this we drew conclusions as to which rocks were sedimentary, igneous or metamorphic.
History - Stone Age
To kick start our topic on the Stone Age, we explored when the Stone Age began and understood that there were three distinct periods during this time; Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic. We used our history time line to ensure we knew where this period of history took place, in light of our prior learning on other historical periods such as The Maya, The Great Fire Of London and The Race to the North Pole.
In groups, we further went on to explore events that happened during the Stone Age Period. These events will be explored as we progress through the term.
