Eco Warriors 

At Sparken Hill Academy, we believe that looking after our environment starts right here in our own school grounds. That's why around 20 of our Year 5 and Year 6 pupils take on the important role of Eco Warriors.

Our Eco Warriors are real jobs with real responsibility. Pupils apply for the role and, in recognition of their hard work and commitment, each Eco Warrior is paid £50 for their job and they apply to (and are interviewed) by existing pupils in order to model an adult recruitment approach.  This helps our children understand the value of work, reliability and taking pride in a role that makes a difference to everyone.

Every lunchtime, our Eco Warriors can be spotted around school with their litter pickers, keeping our playgrounds and grounds clean, safe and welcoming. They also take charge of our recycling, sorting paper and, more recently, the milk cartons used across school each day, so that as much as possible is recycled rather than sent to landfill.

Just as importantly, our Eco Warriors are role models for younger pupils. They visit classes and talk to children about why we should never drop litter, how rubbish harms wildlife and the environment, and what we can all do to help. Hearing this message from older pupils they look up to makes a real impact on our younger children.

Our Eco Warriors are also invited each year to attend the Eco Warriors event at Sherwood Pines, where they join pupils from other schools to learn more about protecting the natural world and celebrate the work they do.

We are incredibly proud of our Eco Warriors. Their dedication shows that, whatever your age, you can make a positive difference to your school, your community and the planet. 💚
